Our Story

Our Story

Today, Passmores is a major manufacturer of quality timber buildings. We supply Wooden Garages, Carriage Houses, Open Barns, Equestrian Stables and Sports Club Houses throughout the UK and overseas. We have installed timber buildings all over the country, with many customers in Kent, Sussex, Wiltshire, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, and the Home Counties

It all started with chicken feed

It's hard to believe that the "seed-corn" for this family business when it started over 100 years ago, was quite literally chicken feed. Grandfather Passmore started the Poultry Farmers Supply Co. out of railway arch premises in Strood High Street at the beginning of the last century.

Chicken feed led to chicken houses and during the 1920's and 30's, the company produced a very wide range of poultry houses. Battery farming gradually killed off the demand but the spread of suburban homes led to an ever increasing need for sheds, both for storage, as well as a garden retreat.

Time for a new direction

Time for a new direction

It was in the 1950's that demand for stables, garages and cricket pavilions began to take off. Many of the designs we use today can be traced back to that era.

Over the years our product designs have been refined and improved and we are now able to offer a comprehensive range of garages, garden buildings, equestrian buildings and timber club houses all manufactured to exacting standards.

Due to increased demand for its range of products the company embarked on a planned expansion programme in 2000 and acquired new freehold factory premises in Knight Road, Strood, where our fleet of modern low emission vehicles are also based.

The original High Street premises now accommodates our recently refurbished offices and a showground village displaying examples of all our products.

The success of any manufacturing process relies on the quality of the raw materials, the skills and application of its staff and the precision of its machinery and Passmores is no exception.

Consistent quality is assured by our long term arrangements with leading timber producers.

The majority of our timber is sustainable and is imported direct from the forests of Northern Sweden, renowned for slow grown high quality redwood. The oak frames that feature in our range of Carriage Houses, Cart Lodges and Open Barns are sourced as QPA grade oak beams from Belgium. This grade is the very best available.

All Passmore products are individually manufactured by skilled staff in our factory in Strood, Rochester, Kent. Our timber mill is able to produce all our specialist requirements in house by trained staff, under careful supervision, using modern woodworking machinery.

Panels are jig built for accuracy and compliance with established designs and are quality checked before dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

This will usually depend on the size, height and location of the proposed new building.

If you are positioning the building close to a boundary or in front of the building line of your home when viewed from the road, then planning consent is usually required.

If the building is to be behind the house, more than 2.0m from a boundary and provided the ridge height is less than 4.0m, then you may not need permission, assuming it is for non business use. Most garden sheds and chalets therefore do not need local authority permission.

However, if you live in a listed property or within a conservation area then planning permission is nearly always required.

The Government Planning Portal www.planningportal.gov.uk contains a wealth of additional information and includes an interactive guide covering most circumstances.
