When our client approached Passmores for a timber building at his West Malling property near Maidstone, Kent, he had a specific vision in mind. His cherished vintage cars required dry storage that would protect them and match their classic elegance. His choice of a Passmores two-bay carriage house with an attached cart lodge perfectly exemplified how our 115-year heritage of timber craftsmanship continues to serve discerning collectors.
The brief called for a substantial structure incorporating a 6.0m x 6.0m two-bay carriage house with a 4.2m x 6.0m attached cart lodge. Maximising functionality while maintaining elegant proportions, the design featured a 6m depth specification, providing enough room to store and to work on his vintage vehicles. He has already seem a similar design in our carriage house design gallery.
This carriage house illustrates Passmores' renowned craftsmanship, with its striking oak frontage featuring robust 150 x 150 sawn green oak posts. Each entrance is finished with traditional curved braces, carefully morticed, tenoned, and pegged by hand—the same time-honoured techniques that Passmores has been perfecting for decades. This attention to traditional joinery methods ensures both structural integrity and authentic period aesthetics that complement these classic vehicles.
The 35° pitch trussed rafter roof, finished with natural slate, created a distinguished finish that matched perfectly with his Georgian property.
The premium quality of materials was a key factor in our clients decision-making process. The slow-grown Swedish timber that we use, combined with our ethical sourcing practices, aligned perfectly with his vision for a structure that would age gracefully alongside his cherished cars while maintaining its structural integrity for decades to come.
Client Testimonial:
"From the very beginning, I was impressed by Passmores' attention to detail. As a collector of vintage cars, I’m into the details, and Passmores were on top of everything throughout the entire process. Their communication was excellent, and workmanship at the final installation was first class.
The finished building looks as though it could have been built in the same era as my cars. The whole experience has been outstanding, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Passmores to anyone looking for a similar structure."
