The best has been saved for last: of all the buildings seen, the best without doubt for our purpose was constructed from timber (see Fig 8.1). Although some buildings were poorly made and not to be recommended, if one made sure of what one was buying, this is the best choice. Wood lends itself so well to further work; it is easy to put an extra window in, and insulating can easily be carried out. Even banging a nail in to hang a tool on is possible; you cannot do this in steel or concrete.
