Helping the Environment

At Passmores we all acknowledge that we have a duty to minimise our impact on the environment.

Why we build with timber

Timber is the only truly renewable construction material on the planet.

Trees absorb the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and produce oxygen whilst growing, thus helping to combat global warming.

When harvested, timber requires far less energy to produce and build with than other construction materials.

Source of supply

Our principle timber supplier is Stenvalls Trä AB, www.stenvalls.se based in Sikfors Northern Sweden. Our timber is shipped monthly by boat from Härnösand in the Gulf of Bothnia to the port of Rochester Kent.

Forest Management in Sweden is considered to be amongst the best in the world. Long term forest sustainability is assured with 2 for 1 planting and regeneration schemes which meet exacting biodiversity and environmental standards.

FSC Chain of Custody certification

Passmores are one of the first timber buildings manufacturers in the UK to have achieved certification under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody scheme.

Strict systems of control mean that our timber can be traced back through the supply chain to FSC accredited forests.

FSC accredited certification means that the forest of origin has been independently inspected and evaluated according to strict environmental, social and economic principles and criteria as laid down by the Forest Stewardship Council A.C.

Passmores certificate confirms that we source timber, manufacture products and sell our goods in accordance with FSC standards 40-004 (Chain of Custody) and 40-005 (Controlled Wood).

The FSC label is recognised worldwide and is endorsed by environmental charities including WWF, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Woodland Trust.

By using FSC timber, Passmores are supporting better management of the world's forests.

Conservation of energy

We turn our wood waste into energy by reducing scrap timber and offcuts into chippings which are fed into an automatic system which produces warm air for factory heating.

The system was developed for Passmores by Ranheat Engineering Ltd (www.ranheat.com) and is believed to be the first of a new generation of compact automatic heating systems.

We now save 3000 litres of heating oil per month in winter as well as the transport and landfill costs associated with 40m3 of wood waste per month.

Timber preservation

External claddings and sole plates of garages, stables and Club range buildings are pressure preservative treated using the latest Copper-HDO formulations.

Most of our timber is pressure treated in Sweden where rigorous environmental standards are strictly observed.

All garden building components are drenched in preservative as they are passed through our treatment plant before delivery.

The preservative is harmless to people, plants, pets and is also
bio-degradable in the event of spillage.

To get the best from your garden building we recommend that a further coat of wood preservative is applied to the exterior within 6 months and annually thereafter.
